Photo Rights & Reuse Policy
Credit is not permission. We identify our sources and openly acknowledge where reuse rights have not been verified.
Why we publish portraits
Portraits help readers identify the people discussed in our reporting and directory. They are used for editorial identification, not to suggest that a person, company, government body or publisher endorses Cambodia Monitor.
A public role or a newsworthy subject does not remove a photographer’s copyright. This policy explains our position; it is not a licence, a legal ruling, or a substitute for permission.
Our honest position on permission
Some portraits currently come from editorial publications selected by our editor. Permission to reuse those publisher-sourced photographs has not been independently verified. We do not describe them as licensed, public domain, or officially permitted merely because we can access them.
Being online, appearing on an official website, being supplied by a reader, or being credited does not itself grant reuse rights. We do not make a blanket claim that all our image use qualifies as fair use, fair dealing or another copyright exception; any such assessment depends on the image, use and applicable law.
What our source and rights labels mean
“Source” identifies where we found an image. “Photo” names a photographer or organisation where that attribution is known. A publisher may be the source without being the copyright owner. Neither label proves permission or endorsement.
“Editorial sourced” means an editor selected a sourced photograph, with no verified reuse licence implied. “Licensed” and “official permitted” describe recorded rights categories, not a blanket claim about every image. An official source alone is not evidence of permission. Copyright remains with the relevant rights holder unless evidence establishes otherwise.
Official pages, archives and presentation
Where an official page is inaccessible, a portrait may have been retrieved from a public web archive of that page. The original source is still credited. An archive preserves access, not permission, and does not turn an image into public-domain material.
Portraits may be resized or cropped to fit the directory. We do not generate or invent portraits of real people. When a suitable source photograph is unavailable, we use initials instead. If an image is removed over a rights concern, initials can stand in until a suitable replacement is available.
Reusing an image from our website
We cannot grant you rights to third-party photographs simply because they appear here. Do not treat our credits, a download, or a screenshot as permission to republish an image. Contact the relevant rights holder and check any applicable licence and conditions before using it elsewhere.
How we handle a rights concern
Rights holders and their authorised representatives can request a corrected credit, a source correction, replacement, or removal. You do not need to sign in or subscribe to raise a concern.
We will review the image and the information supplied, ask for clarification if needed, and act promptly on substantiated requests. Depending on the concern, this may mean correcting attribution, replacing the portrait or removing it. We do not promise a fixed response deadline or that every disputed use is legally permitted. This page does not resolve an individual dispute.
Request a correction or removal
Email our editorial contact with the following details:
- The Cambodia Monitor page URL and which image concerns you.
- Your name, contact email and whether you are the rights holder or their representative.
- A source link or other relevant evidence of your rights or authority to act.
- What you would like changed: credit, source, replacement or removal.
Or send the same details through our contact form។
Please do not send identity documents or unrelated sensitive information in an initial request. If you are not the rights holder but notice an attribution error, you can still let us know.
